The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has warned that refiners, depot operators, petroleum marketers, and filling station owners could face regulatory sanctions if investigations reveal evidence of consumer exploitation in Nigeria's downstream petroleum sector.

The commission said its preliminary findings indicate that reductions in petrol pump prices have remained marginal despite the recent decline in global crude oil prices. FCCPC expressed concern that consumers have not benefited from the drop in international oil prices, even though marketers often increase pump prices quickly whenever crude prices rise.

Meanwhile, the World Bank's latest Global Gas Flaring Tracker Report revealed that global gas flaring reached a six-year high of 167 billion cubic metres in 2025, with Nigeria listed among the world's worst gas-flaring countries despite efforts to commercialise associated gas and improve domestic energy supply.
