ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS SET FOR DECISIVE GOVERNORSHIP PRIMARIES AMID CONSENSUS TENSIONS AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS

May 21, 2026

The All Progressives Congress is set to conduct decisive governorship primaries across the 36 states on Thursday, as internal tensions mount over efforts to impose consensus candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections. While party leaders and key stakeholders in several states have pushed for consensus arrangements to prevent internal divisions, the move has faced resistance from aspirants insisting on contesting at the polls.

Closely watched contests are expected in states such as Rivers, Adamawa, Kwara, and Plateau, where political alignments and stakeholder interests are already shaping the dynamics of the primaries. In Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s position has drawn particular attention following his reported withdrawal from the race, heightening speculation about the unfolding political landscape.

Meanwhile, concerns have also emerged over the exclusion of Fubara’s loyalists from the list of cleared aspirants for the Rivers State House of Assembly primary, scheduled for Wednesday. Political observers say the development signals a potentially difficult path ahead for the governor in securing a second-term ticket, amid intensifying intra-party contests.
