EKITI WOMEN DEMAND 35% AFFIRMATIVE ACTION, URGE TINUBU TO BOOST FEMALE REPRESENTATION IN POLITICS
April 10, 2026
Ekiti women in politics calls on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, to, as a matter of urgent national importance, enforce the 35% affirmative action for women in all political appointments and elective positions, including the National Assembly.
Nigeria stands at a critical juncture in its democratic journey. The continued underrepresentation of women in governance undermines national growth, weakens inclusive policy-making, and limits the full potential of our democracy. Women remain the backbone of our society, driving development at the grassroots, nurturing families, and contributing significantly to economic and social stability.
To practically achieve the 35% affirmative action, we strongly advocate that each state of the federation should produce at least one female Senator. This strategic political step will ensure equitable representation, deepen democratic values, and institutionalize gender balance in the highest legislative chambers of the land.
