June 11, 2026

The Federal Government has signed a Transfer of Sentenced Persons Agreement with Ethiopia, paving the way for the repatriation of more than 100 Nigerians currently serving prison sentences in the East African country.

According to a statement by Dr. Magnus Eze, Special Assistant on Communication and New Media to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the agreement allows both countries to cooperate on the transfer of prisoners in line with their respective laws and international obligations.

He added that Nigeria and Ethiopia have agreed to commence immediate implementation of the deal, a move expected to strengthen bilateral relations and ensure affected Nigerians can serve their sentences closer to home.
