The Federal Government has called on the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to take greater ownership of the Nigeria National Water Compact 2026–2030.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, made the call in Abuja during a nationwide consultation on the draft Compact.

The Federal Government said stronger collaboration with state governments is essential to addressing Nigeria’s growing water and sanitation challenges and improving access to safe water for citizens.

The initiative is expected to provide a coordinated framework for investment and action in the water sector, with state governments playing a key role in its implementation.

According to the government, the new Compact will help strengthen Nigeria’s water security and promote more sustainable delivery of water and sanitation services across the country.
