NIGERIA RECORDS 148% SURGE IN FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT AS AFRICA FLOWS DECLINE
August 10, 2026
Nigeria recorded one of Africa’s strongest performances in foreign investment in 2025, with Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows rising by 148 per cent despite a broader decline across the continent.
The development was contained in the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) World Investment Report 2026, which showed that global FDI increased by six per cent to $1.624 trillion in 2025, compared with $1.532 trillion recorded in 2024.
The increase marked a reversal of the global trend, bringing an end to two consecutive years of decline in foreign investment flows.
However, Africa recorded a significant drop in FDI during the year, with inflows falling by 26 per cent from $94 billion in 2024 to $70 billion in 2025.
In contrast, developed economies recorded an 11 per cent increase in investment flows.
Against this backdrop, Nigeria’s 148 per cent growth in FDI stood out as one of the strongest performances on the continent, highlighting the country’s improved position in attracting foreign investment despite the challenging regional investment environment.
