NLC URGES WORKERS TO MOBILISE FOR LIVING WAGE, 2027 POLITICAL PARTICIPATION

July 30, 2026

The Nigeria Labour Congress has called on Nigerian workers to prepare for the struggle for a living wage and greater participation in the country's political future ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the 2026 Rain School in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, NLC President Joe Ajaero said workers must no longer remain passive participants in the democratic process. He maintained that organised labour has the collective strength to influence governance and shape the outcome of the 2027 elections if united.

Ajaero also described the current ₦70,000 national minimum wage as inadequate, calling for a true living wage that reflects the rising cost of living. He criticised delays in labour law reforms and urged workers to remain united in the fight for better welfare, stronger labour protections and improved democratic accountability.
