REFINERY RESUMES PETROL SALES IN NAIRA TO AVERT FUEL SCARCITY
July 27, 2026
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has resumed the sale of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) in naira, saying the decision was made to protect consumers and prevent fuel scarcity. A senior company official disclosed that the move was not because the crude oil supply challenge had been resolved, but was taken in the interest of the country.
According to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the refinery observed that some fuel importers were allegedly withholding their stocks in anticipation of higher petrol prices. He said the situation risked creating an artificial shortage and driving up fuel costs across the country.
The source explained that the refinery decided to halt dollar-denominated fuel sales and return to naira transactions to ensure a steady supply of petrol and help stabilise prices. He maintained that the decision was aimed at preventing unnecessary hardship for Nigerians despite the unresolved crude oil supply concerns.
