TINUBU ORDERS GOVERNORS TO ACCELERATE CNG PROGRAMME
September 20, 2026
President Bola Tinubu has directed all 36 state governors to accelerate the implementation of the National Affordable Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, Transit Programme to enable Nigerians begin seeing measurable reductions in transportation fares from October 1.
In an official statement released on Saturday, September 19, 2026, the President referred to his August 27 meeting with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, where a joint objective was established to reduce transportation costs across the country through the use of domestic alternative energy.
Tinubu said the CNG programme was part of efforts to provide cheaper transportation options and reduce the impact of high energy costs on Nigerians.
Meanwhile, the President has ruled out a return to the petrol subsidy regime, saying Nigeria must instead accelerate its transition to CNG and other cheaper energy alternatives.
Tinubu said Nigeria’s status as a gas-rich country provides an opportunity to reduce the country’s exposure to disruptions in global energy markets.
According to the President, fluctuations in global energy prices continue to put pressure on petrol and diesel costs, contributing to rising transportation expenses.
He said expanding the use of CNG would help shield the economy and citizens from global fuel-price shocks while supporting efforts to reduce transportation costs.
