CHELLE BACKS RETURN TO TWO-YEAR AFCON CYCLE

October 12, 2026

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has backed calls for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to return to its traditional two-year cycle, describing it as important to the development of African football.

The Franco-Malian tactician said holding the tournament every two years would give African nations more opportunities to improve their performances, develop players and compete against top opposition.

Chelle argued that a four-year cycle could make it harder for teams to sustain progress, adding that a biennial competition would help maintain development across African football.
